Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) - Short Film Review (Ashish's Attic)

April 12, 2018

"Sweet, sumptuous and heartwarming, Tiwari's second film is, even more, self assured and likeable. With a clear message on societal values, family and more, B.K.B is relevant as much as it is raw and earnest. This one is a family entertainer with a big heart, an engaging story and a top-notch cast."-Ashish's Attic

Recently I watched Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's (Director of the critically acclaimed Nil Battey Sannata released in 2016, serving as Tiwari's debut film) Bollywood film 'Bareilly Ki Barfi'. Based on (storyline) the French novel The Ingredients of Love written by Nicolas Barreau.

In short, the film focuses on a free-spirited girl whose parents are arranging her marriage. After many denials, Bitti (played by Kriti Sanon) feels a little-deflated and decides to flee. However comes back, after picking and reading a book (at the station) titled 'Bareilly Ki Barfi'  by chance. As she reads the story she instantly feels drawn to the main character, seeing a striking resemblance to her own self. With more optimism, this time round Bitti sets out to find the author who she feels is her match as he supposedly wrote a book indirectly about her. What follows is love, family drama, false identities, mix-ups and more.

The film features Ayushmann Khurrana and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles, while Rajkummar Rao plays a pivotal role in the film itself.

In terms of the acting:

Samrudhi Ghosh of India Today appreciated the performances of the actors saying that, "The strength of Bareilly Ki Barfi is its cast. Kriti Sanon's bohemian small-town-girl act is a far cry from her usual fare, but she pulls it off with aplomb. Ayushmann Khurrana looks effortless as the jilted aashiq trying to win over the woman of his dreams by hook or by crook. But it is Rajkummar Rao who steals the show as the timid salesman turned rangbaaz." Samrudhi concluded her review by saying that, "After Nil Battey Sannata, director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari brings us another engaging watch. There is no dull moment in the film. Light and fluffy, Bareilly Ki Barfi is no heavy seven-course meal, but it is quite the delicious dessert." and gave the film a rating of 3 stars out of 5. -Wikipedia.com [2]

For me, B.K.B was extremely heartfelt, touching and real. Even with its limited soundtrack the film certainly kept a close eye on its detailed narrative. With sheer nuance and relatability, this is a small town romance/comedy not to be missed.

See the official trailer here [3]:

Filled with humour, wit, stellar performances and a tight-knit script. 'Bareilly Ki Barfi' transcends itself past its cliches, predictable outcomes and more with a story that's hard not to like or even pay attention too. It's 'Girl Meets Boy' with an added refreshing twist to the romantic Genre within Bollywood films. What's also different is the films limited song tracklist, as many Bollywood films are known for their wide number of songs. Whereas B.K.B is an exception to this formulae entirely as its keeps all eyes on the narrative at hand and features songs only when pivotal to the characters emotion/situation at hand. Further working as a narrative trigger in signposting a change in the narrative and overall pace of it.

I would definitely recommend 'B.K.B' for those wanting a refreshing change when it comes to Bollywood romcoms. If not for this reason, then view the film for Rao's breakout performance (who plays a pivotal role in the film) and the rest of the cast. Who really bring each of their respective characters to life, standing out in their own right respectively. Not to mention bringing the story's overall script (written by Nitesh Tiwari, Shreyas Jain and Rajat Nonia) to life based on the French novel 'The Ingredients of Love'  written by Nicolas Barreau.

Ashish's Attic Rating: 8/10
